The teams for the South East Regional playoffs are now set. With a 4-2 victory Wednesday morning Archbishop Shaw based Refuel enters the tournament as the 2^nd District East Champions while Archbishop Rummel based Deanie’s Seafood will enter as the 2^nd District East runner-up. They will join First District Champion Retif Oil (Jesuit) and First District runner-up Peake BMW (Brother Martin), Second District West Champion Valero St. Charles (Destrehan), Second District runner-up Otto Candies (Hahnville), Sixth District Champion Gauthier Amedee (Dutchtown) and Sixth District runner-up LLOG Exploration in the tournament which begins Satuday July 14 at Kirsch Rooney Stadium.

It will be the first Regional tournament in over 30 years which will be played with wooden bats only. All American Legion teams in Louisiana played with wooden bats this year in a return to the traditional game. Many players found the change to be very good while all found it to be challenging. The wooden bats change the dynamic of the game. There are more teams playing small ball, bunting, using hit and runs, stealing bases, etc. Scoring was at a premium although there were exceptions such as the 11-10 game between Gulf Coast Bank and Deanie’s on Sunday.

In another break from tradition, four teams will advance from this tournament to play in the Louisiana State tournament at Moore Field on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus beginning on July 28, 2012.
