Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic Begins Friday

NEW ORLEANS – The Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic returns to Tad Gormley Stadium this Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24, with nearly 2,000 student-athletes from six states slated to compete in the two-day event.

Nearly 2,000 Student-Athletes To Be In Action at Tad Gormley Stadium

NEW ORLEANS – The Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic returns to Tad Gormley Stadium this Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24, with nearly 2,000 student-athletes from six states slated to compete in the two-day event. Since 1993, this event has been the largest high school track and field invitational in Louisiana, featuring more than 100 boys and girls teams from throughout the Southeast.

Some of the key events in this year's meet which could yield Sugar Bowl Track Classic records include the boys' 400-meter dash (Finals, Saturday, 1 p.m.), the boys' shot put (Friday, 4 p.m.), the girls' 1,600-meter run (Saturday, 1 p.m.) and both the boys' (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.) and girls' high jumps (Friday, 4 p.m.).

Metro New Orleans schools with student-athletes in action last year included: Academy of our Lady, Bonnabel, Brother Martin, Carver, Clark, Cohen, Country Day, Curtis, Dominican, East Jefferson, East St. John, Ehret, Franklin, Helen Cox, Higgins, Holy Cross, Jesuit, John McDonogh, Karr, Lusher, Mandeville, McDonogh 35, McGehee, Miller McCoy, Mt. Carmel, Newman, O.P. Walker, Rummel, Shaw, St. Augustine, St. Mary's, Warren Easton, West Jefferson and Xavier Prep.

St. Paul's Episcopal of Alabama and Pearl High School of Mississippi earned the 2011 Allstate Sugar Bowl Track and Field Classic titles on March 25-26 at Tad Gormley Stadium. St. Paul's Episcopal claimed the girls' team title with 101 points and Pearl High School's 74 points earned the boys' team title.

John Curtis' Dalton Duvio vaulted to a new meet record of 17'01", the number two mark in the nation at that stage of the season, earning him the boys' Outstanding Field Performer award. South Plaquemines' Bradley Sylve took the 100m (10.24) in meet record time and the 200m (21.25) to claim the boys' Outstanding Track Performer award.

For the girls, Mandeville's Nichole Freeman captured both the javelin (137'10") and discus (105'05") titles to earn girls' Outstanding Field Performer. McDonogh 35 freshman Marcquita Stalbert was a triple sprint winner (100m, 200m, 400m), a first in the 18-year history of the event, earning her the girls' Outstanding Track Performer award.
