www.RaginCajuns.com - The 24th ranked Raginâ€™ Cajuns used a no-hitter from Ashley Brignac in game one to clinch their 10th Sun Belt Regular Season Championship in 11 years. The Cajuns won that game by a final score of 3-0 and went on to win game two 12-3.
On the day, not only did the Cajuns continue their dominance of the league, Christi Orgeron made history by breaking the leagueâ€™s single-season RBI record by driving in five runs in game two to bring her season total to 84, the best in the NCAA. Orgeron also scored three runs on the day to bring her total in that category to 68, also the best the nation.
The Cajuns (44-9, 18-5) moved their record when scoring first to 38-3 on the season. The Warhawks (27-25, 10-13) fell to 15-7 at home.
GAME ONE - Louisiana 3, La.-Monroe 0
The Cajuns used a no-hitter from junior ace Ashley Brignac to clinch the Sun Belt Regular Season title with a 3-0 win over La.-Monroe on the road.
Brignac (26-5) went the distance for the Cajuns, holding the Warhawks to no hits and just two walks while striking out 13, the sixth time this season she struck out 10 or more.
Sarah Draheim led the Cajuns at the plate with two hits and two RBI while the Cajuns posted six hits as a team.
The Cajuns would get up early, plating two runs in the top of the first inning. Nerissa Myers led off the inning with a walk and moved to second when Christi Orgeron reached on a fielderâ€™s choice. Myers would move to third on a fly ball to right field and score on a double steal attempt in which La.-Monroe catcher Roxane Cassel would throw the ball into left field.
With one run already across, Sarah Draheim delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to plate Orgeron and give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead. In the inning, Orgeron extended her national lead with her 66th run scored on the season and Myers moved her season total to 61, the third highest total in the nation.
After the shaky first inning for Tiffany Mills (13-15), both pitchers would settle in, with Brignac retiring the first 12 batters she faced and Mills holding the Cajuns scoreless for the next 3.2 innings.
In the fifth inning, Draheim would deliver yet again with two out. With Orgeron on third after earlier hitting a single and Paige Cormier standing on first, Draheim delivered her second two-out RBI single as she punched a ball to right field to plate Orgeron and put the Cajuns up 3-0.
The Warhawks would get their first base runner in the fifth inning when Cassel broke up Brignacâ€™s perfect game bid with a one-out walk. Myers would then make a Web Gem-type play, reaching over the fence in foul ground on the left side to catch a pop-up to retire Melissa Rivera and allow Brignac to get out of the inning without allowing a hit.
Brignac would continue to roll as she struck out the side in the sixth. The Warhawks would get their second base runner of the game in the seventh with another one-out walk, however Brignac would cruise through the rest of the inning to secure her sixth career no-hitter.
GAME TWO - Louisiana 12, La.-Monroe 3 (6 innings)
The headline in game two was Orgeron and the Cajunsâ€™ offense as they defeated the Warhawks in six innings, 12-3.
Orgeron went 3-for-4 with five RBI to break the UL and Sun Belt single-season RBI record. Brianna Cherry also posted three hits for the Cajuns who had 123 as a team.
Christina Hamilton (11-2) went the distance for the Cajuns, giving up five hits in six innings with six strikeouts and no walks.
The Cajuns would once again get up on the Warhawks early, plating a run in the first inning. After La.-Monroe starter Stephanie Routzon (8-7) walked the first three batters she faced, Cormier delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Myers and give UL the early 1-0 lead.
Orgeron would break the Sun Belt and UL single-season RBI record in the second inning. After Brianna Cherry and Myers singled, Orgeron delivered a two-RBI single to give the Cajuns a 3-0 lead and move her season total to an NCAA-leading 81.
UL would break the game open in third inning, plating five runs to take an 8-0 lead while sending 11 batters to the plate. The Cajuns would draw five walks in the inning and deliver just two hits while Orgeron picked up two more RBI and Draheim and Myers each picked up one.
The Warhawks would get three runs in the bottom of the inning, pulling to within five at 8-3, as they got their first four hits of the day after Hamilton had thrown 2.1 perfect innings.
The Cajuns got two more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 10-3. Myers singled to leadoff the inning and stole second base. She would score on an RBI double by Bridges to give the senior first baseman 70 RBI on the season, making her and Orgeron two of just three in the nation with 70 RBI.
After pinch runner Megan Waterman made to third on a ground out, she would score on an RBI single by Cormier to give the Cajuns 10 runs for the 16th time in 2011.
The Cajuns would post two more runs in the sixth inning thanks to singles from Cherry, Katie Smith, Orgeron and Bridges with Smith and Bridges posting the RBI.
The Cajuns will look to sweep the Warhawks on Sunday with a single game scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The Warhawks are the only team in the Sun Belt that the Cajuns have not swept.
