HAMMOND – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team to a 2-0 start, Lady Lion junior midfielder Lauren Stillians and senior defender Kyle MacIntosh received Southland Conference Player of the Week honors in an announcement from the league office on Tuesday.
Stillians, a Manhattan Beach, Calif. native, was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. The Defensive Player of the Week honor was the third career league weekly accolade for MacIntosh, who hails from St. Catharines, Ont. Texas State senior goalkeeper Lauren Frazier was named Goalkeeper of the Week to prevent Southeastern from making a clean sweep of the first weekly honors announced by the Southland in 2011.
Though she did not find the net during the opening weekend, Stillians was the catalyst for the Lady Lion offense, which notched 10 goals in the first two wins. In Friday's 6-0 victory over Alcorn State, Stillians became the 12th student-athlete in school history with more than two assists in a match, finishing with three assists. The 2010 All-Southland Conference honorable mention selection added two assists in Sunday's 4-0 win over Alabama State.
"This is a very well deserved honor for Lauren," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "Her engine was running at top speed this weekend with a tireless effort in winning balls and distributing through the midfield. She was very effective with involving multiple players in the attack and sending the final ball to create goal scoring opportunities."
While Stillians was fueling the Lady Lion offensive attack, MacIntosh anchored a dominant Southeastern defensive effort. The two-time All-Southland Conference performer teamed with junior Kerry McWhirter, sophomore Shanyce Shaw and freshman Jennifer Marzi to hold the opposition to a combined three shots in a pair of shutout victories.
"We are very pleased for Kyle as she displayed strong leadership skills from the back line in leading the team to a successful weekend," Hornbuckle commented. "She did a very good job cutting out opportunities for the opposing team and was quick to help us generate our attack."
Stillians, MacIntosh and the Lady Lions will be back in action on Friday. Southeastern opens a four-match road swing with a 7 p.m. match at in-state foe Louisiana-Lafayette.
