FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas junior Louis Tomlinson was named the 2016-17 Southland Men’s Golf Player of the Year, the conference announced Monday along with All-Conference selections. Tomlinson earned the award one year after being tabbed Newcomer of the Year for the 2015-16 season.

Tomlinson led the Bears in six of 11 competitions this season, capping his junior year with a tie for fifth place at the 2017 Southland Championship. The Welwyn Garden City, England native was named Southland Golfer of the Month in March.

McNeese’s Daniel O’Loughlin was named Freshman of the Year, finishing the regular season atop the final conference Golfstat player rankings. The Nottingham, England native helped the Cowboys to their second consecutive Southland championship, finishing 19th – one of four McNeese players to finish in the top 20 in McKinney. O’Loughlin led McNeese in seven of their 11 competitions in 2016-17.

Blake Stock of Stephen F. Austin earned this year’s Newcomer of the Year honor, along with Third Team All-Conference distinction. The junior transfer from McLennan Community College (Waco, Texas) finished tied for third place at this year’s championship, two strokes off the top finishing score.

Fifth-year head coach Austin Burk was named Coach of the Year for the second-straight season after leading McNeese to consecutive championship titles. Burk has cemented the Cowboys’ spot atop the Southland during his time in Lake Charles, having led them to their first conference championship title since 1979 last year. The momentum continued in 2017 as McNeese won a tightly contested team title again with a score of 918 – four strokes ahead of second place.

McNeese added two more players to the All-Conference selections, including three-time pick Andreas Krokeide to the First Team and junior Ian Berrigan to the Third Team. Krokeide, a 2016 All-Conference Second Team pick, led the Cowboys in three of their competitions this season. Krokeide finished tied for 11th at the 2017 championship while Berrigan took a 15th-place finish.

Albert Badosa-Soler of Nicholls earned First Team All-Conference distinction after taking top medalist honors at the 2017 championship. The junior out of Girona, Spain shot 225 through three rounds, finishing tied for first with HBU junior and Third Team selection Val Almendarez. The two of them went six holes in a sudden-death playoff before Badosa-Soler finally separated himself on the pair’s fourth go at hole 18.

Six out of 15 selections this year are returning All-Conference picks, including four of five Second Team members. Seniority reigned in this year’s teams, with all but two members – O’Loughlin and SFA sophomore Angelo Leyvani – being upperclassmen. All five picks to the Second Team are seniors.

McNeese and Badosa-Soler will learn their NCAA Regional destinations on Thursday, May 4 during the NCAA Selection Show on the Golf Channel at 11 a.m. CT. Regional rounds will take place May 15-17.
