Southern’s late rally fall short as Nicholls survives 10-9

THIBODAUX – Southern University baseball scored six runs in the ninth inning to rally from a 9-3 deficit but fell to Nicholls State 10-9 after a wild pitch lead to a Colonels run Wednesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

With two outs and Nicholls State’s Gavin Wehby on third, closer Troy Lewis’ pitched sailed wide allowing the Colonels to escape with a win

Southern trailed 7-0 before responding with a 3-run seventh inning and tying the game after scoring six runs on three hits. The Colonel defense also committed two errors in the inning allowing the huge rally by Southern.

Outfielder Javeayan Williams finished 4 for 5 at the plate including a triple while designated hitter John Pope recorded 3 RBIs as the Jaguars belted out nine hits.

A total of 14 pitchers were used in the game with Adam Tarver earning the win for Nicholls State and Lewis picking up the loss for Southern.

Southern, who plays their next eight games away from Baton Rouge, travels to face Memphis for a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m.
