Southern University remained alive in the SWAC baseball tournament Thursday with a 6-2 loser’s bracket victory over Alabama A&M at the MLB Urban Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium.

However, the other Louisiana entrant in the tournament, SWAC West Division winner Grambling State, was eliminated with an 8-6 loss to Prairie View A&M.

The Jaguars move into a 9 a.m. Friday game against Jackson State, which defeated Southern 4-2 in the opening round on Wednesday. The survivor of the early game comes back at 3 p.m. to face Texas Southern.

TSU and Alabama State are in the driver’s seat to reach Sunday’s final as the last two unbeaten teams in the eight-team tournament. The winners of the two early games on Friday must win two more games to reach the final, while Texas Southern and Alabama State need just one win to move on.

Texas Southern took an 8-6 victory over Jackson State in 10 innings to move on, while Alabama State was a 6-1 winner over Alcorn State.
