HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana jumped out to a big lead against Seton Hall and held off a late Pirate offensive attack for a 10-7 non-conference win Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Lions (35-18) jumped on reigning NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week Zach Prendergast for three runs in the second inning, taking the early lead on Seton Hall (29-22).

Webb Bobo, a senior from Prattville, Alabama, singled to left leading off the inning. Derrick Mount, a senior from Saucier, Mississippi, followed with a single to left-center field and then Drew Avans beat out a bunt single to load the bases.

Southeastern plated all three runs without a hit. Bobo scored when Prendergast hit catcher Daniel Wasinger with a pitch. Mount scored on Jacob Seward’s groundout to second base and Avans scored on Ryan Byers’ sacrifice fly to left.

Leading off the fourth, Mount singled for the second time in the game and advanced to second on Avans’ second bunt hit. Both were sacrificed into scoring position by Wasinger. Byers drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Mount then scored on an infield hit by Breaud and Avans scored when the throw from the shortstop got past the first baseman.

The Lions strung together three-consecutive, two-out hits in the fifth.

Mount singled and then scored on Avans’ double into the gap in right-center field. Avans scored on Wasinger’s single up the middle to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.

Corey Gaconi, Southeastern’s starting pitcher, handed the ball over to Mac Sceroler in the seventh and the Pirates started to rally.

Sceroler surrendered a two-run home run to shortstop Rob Dadona in the seventh.

The Lions responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning for a 10-2 lead, but Seton Hall would not back down.

A solo homer leading off the eighth sparked a five-run inning for the Pirates, but Evan Hileman came on to shut the door for Southeastern.

Gaconi (6-4) earned the win, scattering four hits in six shutout innings. He struck out six batters.

Hileman closed out the game with 1.1 scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and one walk, fanning a pair to earn his fourth save of the season.

Prendergast (7-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs in two innings of work. He surrendered three hits and one walk.

Avans (4-for-5), Mount (4-for-5), Bobo (2-for-4) and Wasinger (2-for-3) all enjoyed multi-hit performances for the Lions. Avans and Mount scored four runs each, while Avans drove in three.

The regular season wraps up Saturday for Southeastern with a 12 p.m. contest.
