HAMMOND, La. – LSU Eunice first baseman Rebecca Skains will continue her academic and athletic endeavors as a member of the Southeastern Louisiana softball program, SLU head coach Rick Fremin announced on Wednesday.

Skains will have two years of eligibility remaining in Hammond. The Calhoun, Louisiana native will be reunited with junior college teammates and current Lady Lions Alli Daigle and Maddie Edmonston with whom she helped the Lady Bengals to the 2016 NJCAA Division II Championship.

Skains joins the 10 2018 additions Southeastern made during the initial signing period. The 2016 Juco All-American will provide with the Lady Lions with another power bat in the middle of the lineup, according to Fremin.

“We believe Rebecca can be one of the final pieces needed to put a high quality team on the field in 2018,” Fremin commented. “She is a proven winner and has a bright future with our program. We’re very excited and fortunate that she chose Southeastern.”

As a freshman at LSU E, Skains set a new single-season school record with 25 home runs to go with 83 RBI, 82 runs scored and a .477 batting average. In addition to earning All-American honors, Skains was named the Division II World Series MVP after helping LSU E to the national title. This season, she currently has nine home runs, 31 RBI, 33 runs scored and a .453 batting average.

“We expect that Rebecca can contribute right away offensively,” Fremin said. “Her athleticism makes her an ideal fit for our style of play. With her already knowing several players on our team, we hope the transition she’ll have from juco to here will be smoother.”

Skains prepped at West Ouachita High School, where she was a standout on the basketball court and the softball diamond. As a senior, she was named the NELA Softball Player of the Year and earned All-State honors helping the Lady Chiefs to the Class 4A state championship game. She batted .521 with eight home runs and 52 RBI. On the basketball court, she was an honorable mention All-State performer after helping her team to the District 2-4A championship.

Skains’ future teammates will return to action this week, hosting a three-game series at North Oak Park versus Southland Conference foe Northwestern State. The series opens with a 5 p.m. contest on Friday and concludes with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

Friday will feature the “Flood the Field” promotion and the first 200 students will receive a free t-shirt and food. LionVision subscribers will be able to access a live video (no audio) stream of the series at
