LAFAYETTE – Haley Hayden went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in three runs and belting her second home run in as many days, and No. 16-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball built a 6-1 lead after three innings and defeated Dartmouth, 12-5, on Friday in the Mardi Gras Invitational at Lamson Park.
Louisiana (9-3) will face Big 10-member Maryland (2-9) on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game can be heard in the Lafayette area on ESPN 1420-AM and worldwide on the RadioPup app. A live video stream and live statistics is available at RaginCajuns.com.
All fans attending Saturday’s game are encouraged to use the spaces made available at Fraternity Row on Glynn Abel Drive (limited number of spaces) and at Sorority Row and Printing Services on Coliseum Drive. Parking at the Intramural Fields is also an option. Golf carts will be used to shuttle fans to and from Lamson Park from these satellite lots.
General admission parking will only be available at Cajun Field with a game ticket in hand or by paying the entrance fee. It will be first-come, first-served in conjunction with the fair patrons.
There will be no Reserved Parking at Lamson Park on Saturday as Cajundome Blvd., will be closed to traffic for the majority of the day.
Beth Ashley went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI for Louisiana while Daniella Chavez broke open a close game in the seventh inning with a bases-clearing double.
Summer Ellyson (1-0) pitched 4.2 innings and struck out six in recording her first career victory for Louisiana. Macey Smith pitched the final 2.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts to earn her first save of the season.
Louisiana, which took advantage of 12 walks issued by three Dartmouth pitchers, took a 2-0 lead in the second inning without the benefit of a hit as Ashley and Lexie Comeaux each hit sacrifice flies down the right-field line off Dartmouth starter Breanna Ethridge (0-1), scoring DJ Sanders and Taylor Terrio.
Hayden, who homered in Louisiana’s win over Bowling Green on Thursday, greeted Dartmouth reliever Tessa Grossman in the third inning with a three-run blast to left, giving the Ragin’ Cajuns a 5-0 lead.
Ashley added an RBI single in the fourth inning that gave Louisiana a 7-1 lead before Kassidy Zeringue would later score on an RBI grounder by Kara Gremillion.
The Ragin’ Cajuns would blow the game open with two outs in the seventh as Hayden doubled before Morgan Ebow issued walked to Aleah Craighton and Sanders to load the bases. Chavez then laced the first pitch from Ebow to the left-center field fence, clearing the bases, before Ashley followed on the next pitch with an RBI triple to score pinch-runner Chelsea Lotief.
Chloe Madill hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for Dartmouth (0-2) with Karen Chaw driving in two runs with a double in the fifth.
