HOUSTON, Texas – The ULM softball team fell 6-3 to Sam Houston State on Saturday afternoon in what turned out to be the team’s lone game of the final day of the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic after rain and field conditions forced the cancellation of the Warhawks’ scheduled night game against tournament-host Houston.
FINAL SCORE: Sam Houston State 6, ULM 3
LOCATION: Cougar Stadium / Houston, Texas
RECORDS: ULM (12-7, 0-0 SBC)
Sam Houston (8-11, 0-0 SLC)
-Sam Houston State scored all six runs over the opening four innings and led 6-0 before ULM got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. The Warhawks left nine total baserunners stranded over the course of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sam Houston used a ULM error in the top of the first inning to take the lead before using a pair of RBI groundouts in the third inning and a run scoring single in the fourth to push the advantage to six before ULM came on the attack.
-In the bottom of the sixth, Melanie Coyne doubled to open the inning before Jessie Watts’ two-run homer to right field got the Warhawks on the board to start the comeback attempt. ULM opened the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles but was able to push across just one final run on Coyne’s RBI single into center field before Sam Houston left two final ULM baserunners stranded to end the night.
-Coyne finished with two of ULM’s six hits, while Jayden Mount, Sydney McKay, Samantha Agamaite and Watts each had one hit in the loss.
-Rachael Murphy was saddled with the loss, falling to 2-1 on the season after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts while walking three batters in her five innings of work.
-ULM now gets set to travel to Central Arkansas for a midweek contest on Tuesday night before opening Sun Belt Conference play next weekend at UT Arlington with a three-game series.
