CONWAY, Ark. – The Nicholls State University softball team scored two runs in the fifth and sophomore tossed a four-hit complete game, as the Colonels opened the Southland Conference Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Lamar Wednesday evening at Farris Field.
With the win, Nicholls advances in the winner’s bracket to take on either top-seed McNeese or Sam Houston State, which will be played later tonight. The Colonels’ Thursday game is scheduled for 3 p.m. All of Thursday’s games were moved up an hour due to weather forecasted in the area.
Landry (15-7) was remarkable again for the Colonels and picked up her third win over Lamar in the last six days. She carried a no-hitter into the fifth and ended the game allowing one run on four hits.
Nicholls also had four hits against Ciara Luna (12-16) and finally broke the scoreless tie in the fifth. Veronica Villafranco singled and moved to third on an error, setting up an RBI single from Gretchen Morgan, who led Nicholls with a 2-for 2 day. Sydney Bourg then made it 2-0 after she doubled over the shortstop’s head to drive in Morris.
Lamar made it interesting in the seventh when Kelly Meeuwsen doubled to lead off the inning. Following a flyout, Shelby Henderson smacked a single up the middle to put the score at 2-1. However, a pop up in the infield was out No. 2 and Bourg ended the game after fielding a groundout at third.
The Colonel defense was outstanding throughout for Landry. Amanda Gianelloni saved a hit in the third with a sliding stop and in the fourth, Kasey Frederick made a running catch in rightcenter to rob a run-scoring double. Morris also had great catches at second base in the sixth and seventh innings.
Landry’s win capped an amazing run for the sophomore against the Cardinals. In her three wins since last Friday against Lamar, Landry has a 1.67 ERA and has allowed just nine hits in 21.0 innings pitched.
