MONROE, La. – ULM scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning and Warhawks pitcher Melanie Coyne outdueled Louisiana Tech ace Preslee Gallway in a 1-0 win at Geo Surfaces Field Wednesday night.
Gallaway (11-10) was stellar in the circle, allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out five in the complete-game performance. Coyne (15-8) was just as impressive, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out five for ULM.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning. Coyne led off the frame reaching on a fielding error by LA Tech and then Hunter Hogan hit a bloop single to left field to put runners on first and second and no outs. Jessie Watts then followed with a single up the middle, scoring Coyne and giving ULM a 1-0 lead.
It was all the Warhawks could muster against Gallaway, who retired the final 12 batters of the game after issuing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third inning.
However, Tech had zero success against Coyne. The only real scoring threat for the Lady Techsters came in the top of the seventh inning when Morgan Turkoly and Taria Page drew leadoff walks. The runners advanced to second and third with one out on a sacrifice bunt by Pauline Tufi, but Coyne recorded a strike out and a line out to shortstop to end the threat.
The Lady Techsters return to action Friday when they host UTEP at 2 p.m. in a Conference USA doubleheader.
