FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State University senior Jackie Johnson has been named Southland Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Johnson played a role in both of the Colonels’ victories this weekend against Stephen F. Austin. She saw her first action of the series in the seventh inning of Saturday’s first game with a one-run lead, one out and two runners on base. She picked up a strikeout for the first out then forced a popout to end the game and record her second save of the season.
Johnson then immediately followed that performance with a complete game one-hitter in the second game of the doubleheader. After allowing an infield hit in the first inning, she went on to fan six batters en route to a 2-0 victory. Johnson enters this week ranked first in the conference in opponent batting average (.148), second in ERA (1.79) and third in strikeouts with 80.
The weekly award for Johnson is the first of the season for the native of Belle Chasse, Louisiana and gives Nicholls its fourth pitching award of the season, with sophomore Megan Landry already winning it three times.
The Colonels will head to Baton Rouge Tuesday for a matchup at nationally-ranked LSU. First pitch at Tiger Park is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
