BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) has taken notice of Nicholls State University senior Hannah Haydel ‘s outstanding season as the Colonels’ ace was named softball pitcher of the week for the third straight time, the organization announced Wednesday evening.
Haydel, a native of Ama, La., has now swept the pitcher of the week for consecutive weeks as she received back-to-back honors from the Southland Conference as well. She has been selected pitcher of the week for a total of seven times this season.
Over the weekend, Haydel became the first Colonel to reach 20 wins since 1998 as she led Nicholls to a pair of victories in the sweep over Southeastern Louisiana. She tossed a total of 14 innings in her two complete games, allowing just six hits for a .125 batting average and lowered her nationally ranked ERA by surrendering one earned run. Haydel is currently 11th in the NCAA in ERA with a Southland-best 1.39 mark.
After tossing a four-hitting in the series opener, Haydel carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the second game, but it was broken up on a bunt single. The Lady Lions went on to score the only earned run charged to Haydel for the weekend, putting her at a 0.50 ERA for the series.
Haydel, along with Colonels Kristen Ahearn, Alexis Huss, Kayla Prater, Haley Parkerson, Danielle Phillips and Cari Spain, will be recognized on Saturday for Senior Day before the team’s regular season finale against Lamar. The series opens Friday night with a single game at 6 p.m.
