NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team used a solo home run by Kasey Frederick to tie the game in the seventh inning against Northwestern State, but the Lady Demons answered with a run in the bottom half to take the series opener, 2-1, Friday evening at Lady Diamond Field.

Both teams had five hits in the game, but two by Northwestern State (19-26-1, 9-10 SLC) came in the bottom of the seventh after Nicholls (29-16, 13-6 SLC) evened the score. Jackie Johnson (15-9) allowed a leadoff single before Sidney Salmans sent a base hit up the middle for the walk-off win.

Johnson pitched 6.2 innings for the Colonels, striking out three and walked two. The first run she allowed came on a solo home run by Kellye Kincannon in the third inning.

Mikayla Brown (12-11) tossed a complete game for NSU, allowing only the solo shot by Frederick. Three of the Colonels’ hits were in the top of the third with one down, but Brown got out of the jam after a rocket hit by Amanda Giannelloni was caught at third to end the inning. Gretchen Morgan, Brooke Morris and Sydney Bourg all had base hits to load the bases.

In the bottom half, Kincannon took a 3-1 pitch and sent it over the left center wall with two down. Kincannon led NSU at the plate, finishing 2-for-2.

In the sixth, the Lady Demons nearly extended their lead to 2-0, but Morris was able to gun down the runner at the plate. With a runner on second and two out, Morris let a ground ball get away from her at second and trickle into the outfield. But she was able to field it and fired home to get Elise Vincent trying to score from second.

Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, Frederick drilled an 0-1 pitch over the left center wall, almost the exact location of Kincannon’s shot. But it would be the only run for the Colonels in the loss.

Veronica Villafranco also singled for Nicholls. Samantha Mracich went 0-2 at the plate with a walk, putting an end to her 10-game hitting streak.
