BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team matched or set new single-game highs for runs, hits and stolen bases on the way to an 11-3 non-conference victory over Southern Tuesday afternoon at the Lady Jaguar Softball Field.

Tuesday’s game was the final regular road game for Southeastern (23-25). Southern fell to 15-17 overall in its final home game of the 2017 season.

The Lady Lions matched their season highs for runs and with 14 hits. SLU also stole 12 bases – the most by the team the season and one off the single-game school record of 13 set in the regular season finale last year at Northwestern State.

Sophomore shortstop Jaquelyn Ramon tied the school’s single-game stolen base record with five steals, matching the record set by former Lady Lion Katie Lacour in the aforementioned game at NSU. Junior outfielder Peyton Sutton added three steals, while junior outfielder Maddie Edmonston stole two bags.

Junior outfielder Kinsey Nichols, junior infielder Mahalia Gibson, freshman designated player Mattie Ort, freshman catcher Brennan Bourgeois and junior infielder Alli Daigle collected two hits apiece for SLU. Nichols led SLU with two RBI, while Sutton, Gibson, Edmonston and freshman Ali McCoy each had one RBI. Sutton and Ramon led SLU with two runs apiece.

McCoy (2-0) backed up the Lady Lions’ offensive output in the circle, scattering four hits and striking out six in 6.1 shutout innings of work.

Southeastern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to the speed of Ramon. The Channelview, Texas native drew a one-out walk, then promptly stole second and third. The throw down to third on the second steal attempt sailed into left field, allowing Ramon to walk in for a 1-0 Lady Lion advantage. In the second, McCoy singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Edmonston to stake SLU to a 2-0 lead.

SLU doubled its lead in the top of the third inning. Nichols drew a leadoff walk, then scored when Gibson roped her team-high 10th double of the season into the left field corner. Gibson then stole third and scored when the throw to third skipped into the outfield, giving Southeastern a 4-0 cushion.

Daigle led off the Lady Lion fourth with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt by Edmonston, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Sutton walked, then stole second, third and home to give SLU a 6-0 advantage.

Any hope of a Southern comeback was ended in the top of the fifth inning. Ort laced a triple into the right field corner to open the inning, then scored on an RBI groundout by McCoy. Bourgeois followed with a double – her first collegiate extra-base hit – and would later score on an RBI single by Sutton. Sutton would close out the inning’s scoring after an RBI single by Nichols, coming home to give the Lady Lions a commanding 10-0 lead.

Southeastern was unable to secure its third straight non-conference mercy rule victory. Southern avoided the run rule by taking advantage of two Lady Lion errors and scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the SLU lead to 10-3.

The Lady Lions closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh inning. Ramon led off SLU’s final trip with a single and promptly stole second and third. Nichols then hit a sharp single down the right field line to score Ramon and provide the final 11-3 margin.

Southeastern will now play its final seven games of the regular season in the friendly confines of North Oak Park. The home stand begins with a three-game series versus Sam Houston State this week.
