HAMMOND, La. – Playing in their final matches as Lions, Southeastern Louisiana juniors Natalie Duran and Lucia Bustamante clinched the doubles point, but Sam Houston State rallied in singles play for a 4-3 victory over SLU in the women’s tennis regular season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

Southeastern (3-16, 0-11 Southland) jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Sam Houston State (9-12, 6-5 Southland) rallied with four singles wins to get past the host Lions.

“We want to thank everyone who came to support us today,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. “This season didn’t go as expected for us, but our players always played hard and represented our university with class and sportsmanship.”

After the Lions and Bearkats split matches in doubles play, the doubles point came down to the No. 2 court. Duran and Bustamante, who are both graduating in December and will forego their final year of eligibility, outlasted SHSU’s Khee Yen Wee and Caitlyn Mitchell, 7-6, to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

SLU would stretch the lead to 3-0, as Duran and freshman Yasmine Taylor picked up wins on the bottom two courts. SHSU answered with straight-set victories on courts 1 and 4 to pull within 3-2. The final two matches would be settled in three sets.

On No. 2, SHSU’s Carrie Casey rallied past SLU junior Madina Vorotnikova, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0. Lion junior Dany Raygadas also gave up a set lead, ultimately falling to Mila Milanovic, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 on No. 3.
