HAMMOND, La. – Mac Sceroler struck out a career-high 12 batters to shut down the Northwestern State bats and Taylor Schwaner smacked a pair of two-run home runs to power the Lion offense as Southeastern Louisiana shut out the Demons, 7-0, Thursday in the series opener at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (21-12, 9-7 Southland) and the Demons (10-22, 3-10 Southland) will continue the series Friday at 6 p.m.
Schwaner has homered in three consecutive games for the second time this season, producing five home runs in a span of nine plate appearances. He has also smashed a pair of homers in back-to-back games.
The first of his two home runs came in the first.
After Sceroler (6-1) retired the side in order to open up the game, left fielder Drew Avans drew a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the inning.
Jacob Seward, a senior from New Orleans, knocked an RBI triple into the left-center field gap, driving in Avans. Second baseman Carson Crites followed with an RBI single through the left side, driving in Seward, before Schwaner cleaned up.
Southeastern led, 4-0, before the Demons recorded the first out.
After Crites was hit by a one-out pitch in the third, Schwaner smacked the ball off the video board in left for his second two-run blast.
In the second, Avans threw out Northwestern State’s Matthew Alford trying to extend a single into a double, helping Sceroler face the minimum through three. Not to be outdone by Avans play in the second. Right fielder Ryan Byers robbed the Demons of a home run in the seventh, leaping into the wall in right-center field.
Sceroler fanned a pair of batters each in the second, third and fourth innings. After walking the leadoff hitter in the fourth, the junior right-hander from Denham Springs, Louisiana, retired the next 14 batters he faced.
A two-out walk and single snapped the string, putting runners on the corners in the eighth, but Sceroler caught Demon shortstop Caleb Ricca looking for his third strikeout of the inning and final strikeout of the game.
Reshirt junior Gage Pickett worked a scoreless ninth to close out the game.
Sceroler earned the win, allowing two hits and a pair of walks in eight innings. Demon starter Nathan Jones (3-5) suffered the loss, allowing six runs in three innings.
Sophomore right-hander Corey Gaconi (2-3, 3.13) gets the starting nod at 6 p.m. Friday versus Demon senior righty Evan Tidwell (1-4, 6.55) in the middle game of the series. Fans will be able to enjoy “Fireworks at the Pat” during and after the game.
