NEW ORLEANS — Karan Salwan, a senior on the Xavier University of Louisiana men’s tennis team, was named Thursday to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District II at-large team in the college division for 2016-17.
Salwan, from New Delhi, India, and a graduate of Modern School, is a business management major with a 3.47 cumulative GPA at XULA. He is the second Gold Rush tennis player to be named Academic All-District and the first since Terry Richardson in 2008-09.
The ITA ranks Salwan 21st among NAIA singles players and, with Tushar Mandlekar, 18th in doubles. The Gold Rush (11-5), ranked second nationally, will play at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the round of 16 of the NAIA National Championships at Mobile, Ala., against Reinhardt or SCAD Savannah.
District II consists of non-NCAA colleges in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana and Tennessee. Nominees must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. They also must have completed at least one full calendar year at their current institution and reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Salwan is the only male from the NAIA’s Gulf Coast Athletic Conference or an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) to make an at-large Academic All-District team this year.
First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America® ballot. The College Division Academic All-America® team will be announced June 5.
During the past nine years, Xavier has produced 20 Academic All-District selections, all but one on the first team.
