GRAMBLING, La. — Southern University guard Adrian Rodgers scored a career high 30 points on 8 of 14 shooting as the Jaguars extended their win streak to eight in a 79-66 road win at Grambling Saturday night in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Rodgers, who scored 18 points in the second half, added five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 39 minutes of play.
“(Adrian’s) a guy that always has the green light shoot,” head coach Roman Banks said.
“He’s our first option in a lot of things we run and when he gets into a groove he can score 30 any night.”
Southern’s guard trio combined for 58 of the Jaguars 79 points. Junior Trelun Banks shot over 70 percent from behind the arc and finished the game with 18 points, connecting on 5 for 8 shooting from the 3-point line. Senior point guard Christopher Hyder had a solid performance with ten points and a game high six assists along with six steals.
As a team, the Jaguars forced 18 turnovers and picked the Tigers pockets 13 times.
“When A-Rod has the hot hand it takes a lot of pressure off the rest of us cause its like pick your poison, team don’t know who to guard” Banks said of Rodgers.
“We have more experience at the guard position this year,” said Rodgers. “We know what it takes to create our own shots, so we don’t judge it by misses or makes.”
Junior guard Ervin Mitchell led Grambling with 26 points off a team high 36 minutes of play. Deonte Hearns scored 15 points and had a team high six rebounds while freshman Nigel Ribeiro finished with ten points and five boards off the bench.
The Jaguars (16-7 8-2 SWAC) will look to match a league-high nine consecutive wins Monday night when they face Jackson State in Jackson, Miss.
Jackson State’s 72-64 loss to Alcorn State Saturday night dropped the Tigers out of a second place tie with Southern. Southern is solely in second place behind Texas Southern who also lost Saturday night to Prairie View. Texas Southern visits Baton Rouge to face Southern on Thursday, March 3rd at 7:30 pm.
