Troy, Ala. – The No. 1 seed Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns won their second consecutive Sun Belt Conference softball tournament title in run-rule fashion with a 12-0 victory against No. 2 seed Texas State on Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (46-6), the regular-season champions, have now won three of the past four tournament championships and earn the Sun Belt’s automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Softball Championship. Texas State fell to 41-15 on the year and entered the Sun Belt tournament with a RPI of No. 29.

The NCAA Softball Championship selection show will be tomorrow night at 9 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

Louisiana junior pitcher Alex Stewart was named the Community Coffee Tournament Most Outstanding Player after she went 3-0, threw 18 innings, struck out 23 batters, allowed just two earned runs and scattered seven hits in three appearances in the tournament.

The Ragin’ Cajuns got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when they loaded the bases and sophomore Lexie Comeaux singled to left to bring home sophomore Kara Gremillion, who drew a leadoff walk. Texas State made the call to the bullpen to bring in junior Randi Rupp, who got a fly out and two ground balls, but two consecutive errors plated four more runs for the Ragin’ Cajuns.

Louisiana added to its lead in the third and fourth innings. Senior Haley Hayden scored on a fielding error on junior Daniela Chavez’s grounder to first before redshirt freshman Beth Ashley delivered a two-RBI single to put Louisiana up 8-0. Junior DJ Sanders followed with a double to right center to clear the bases and give the Ragin’ Cajuns an 11-0 lead.

Comeaux scored the Ragin’ Cajuns final tally when junior Kelli Martinez reached on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The 2017 NCAA Softball Championship begins with regional play from May 19-21 and continues with the Super Regionals scheduled for May 25-28. The 2017 NCAA Women’s College World Series will be held at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium – OGE Energy Field in Oklahoma City, June 1-6/7, 2017. The eight teams will compete in a double elimination bracket with the final two teams then competing in a best of three format.
