THIBODAUX, La. – A two-run homer off the bat of Carson Crites in the top of the first inning proved to be enough as the Nicholls State University baseball program fell 4-0 to Southeastern Louisiana University in the series opener Friday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

Crites took a 1-2 outside fastball from Colonels starter Cole Stapler and powered it over the fence in right field to give the Lions (23-14, 11-8 SLC) a 2-0 advantage.

SLU added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh on doubles from Webb Bobo and Taylor Schwaner while starting pitcher Mac Sceroler cruised to a complete-game shutout.

“We let [Schwaner] get off the hook (in the fifth inning), but tip your hat, he pitched his tail off,” Nicholls coach Seth Thibodeaux said. “They got a couple of runs against Stapler when they needed it. But, I felt we could have been better offensively and we let him dictate whatever he wanted to do. He was a really good arm and they played well behind him.”

Sceroler, who tossed eight scoreless innings last week, improved to 7-1 on the season, scattering two hits and striking out nine.

Stapler was stuck with the loss, dropping to 4-5 on the year. He allowed all four runs on 10 hits and struck out five. Senior relief pitcher Daniel Goff closed out the game with three shutout innings, surrendering just three hits.

Nicholls (20-20, 7-9 SLC) two hits were singles off the bats of senior catcher Alex Tucker and sophomore second baseman Ethan Valdez.

The Colonels will travel to Alumni Field tomorrow in Hammond to face the Lions again in a 2 p.m. showdown.
