THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University football program officially announced Wednesday its 2017 game schedule, featuring five home games including a season-opening Southland Conference matchup with rival McNeese.
The opener against McNeese is slated for Thursday, Aug. 31 and marks the first time since 1992 that Nicholls will open its season with a league game. The rest of the home schedule is highlighted by contests against Prairie View A&M (Sept. 16), Northwestern State (Oct. 7), Abilene Christian (Oct. 14) and HBU (Nov. 4).
The Prairie View game will serve as Family Day. The Panthers will be the first Division I nonconference opponent to play at John L. Guidry Stadium since the 2009 season. Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 7 against rival NSU.
Along with Prairie View, the Colonels’ nonconference schedule consists of Texas A&M in College Station on Sept. 9. It will be the first meeting with the Aggies and second straight season the that Colonels will square off against a program from the SEC. Last year, Nicholls nearly pulled off an upset over Georgia in the season opener, 26-24.
The Colonels’ road conference schedule begins with two games in September, starting with a trip to Sam Houston on the 23rd. The following weekend, Nicholls heads back to Texas for a matchup at Lamar on the 30th. Nicholls then closes out its road slate at UIW (Oct. 28), Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 11) and in the River Bell Classic at Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 16).
Nicholls is coming off a 5-6 season and a winning record in league play at 5-4. The Colonels’ two nonconference losses were at Georgia and in overtime at FBS South Alabama.
The Colonels begin spring practice today (Wednesday, March 15) and will conclude the spring with its Spring Game on April 8.
