Privateers will represent Southland Conference as part of 16-team field
New Orleans – For the first time in the program’s history, the University of New Orleans women’s basketball team will participate in the 24th Preseason WNIT in November. Tournament officials made the announcement Wednesday and named the 16-team field.
“It’s humbling that they selected us to represent the Southland Conference.” said Privateers head coach Keeshawn Davenport. “I’m very happy for the girls, they are very excited and they’re looking forward to the challenge and opening the season in the tournament.
The rest of the field consists of: CSU-Northridge, Drake, George Mason, Houston, Liberty, Louisiana, Louisville, Michigan, Milwaukee, Old Dominion, Oregon, St. Francis (PA), Southeast Missouri State, Texas A&M and Toledo.
The Privateers finished 14-15 overall and 9-9 in Southland Conference play last season. They reached the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 2013.
UNO returns senior-to-be Randi Brown, a First Team All-Southland Conference selection as a junior and the conference’s leading scorer in 2016-17 averaging 22.7 points a game. The Houma, Louisiana native was the nation’s seventh leading scorer.
Post player Shania Woods, who had a solid sophomore season, returns for her junior campaign after averaging 9.9 points and 7.4 rebounds a game.
“It’s a testament to how far this program has come over the last seven years.” Davenport continued, “These are exciting times for our university, athletic department and our program.”
All games in the Preseason WNIT are hosted by participating schools. First round matchups and the tournament bracket will be announced later this spring.
