Nicholls, O’Callaghan and Mitchell set school indoor marks

Birmingham, Ala. – It was a school and personal record day for members of the University of New Orleans track and field teams at the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazer Invite Friday.

Sophomore high hurdler Michael Nicholls senior Clayton O’Callaghan and thrower Nicholas Mitchell set school records in the first competition of the indoor season. The meet was held at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena, site of the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship in February.

“We had one victory and one second place which is fantastic,” said head track and field coach Benjamin Dalton. And we had 3 school records and 7 personal bests so it was a good day.”

Nicholls, last year’s Southland Conference Track Freshman of the Year, won the 60-meter high hurdles in 7.96 seconds, a new personal and school record.

“He stayed composed because he didn’t have a great start but he just put his feet down fast and he did really well,” said Dalton

After a solid cross country season, senior Clayton O’Callaghan started the indoor season off with a school record in the 1000-meter run crossing the finish line in 2:41.33.

A record was broken in a field event as Nicholas Mitchell finished 10th in the weight throw but his 47 feet one-half inch effort is a program best.

Long jumper Michael Strong took second place in the long jump and his distance of 22 feet 11 inches is a personal best.

Sprinter Chelise Brown of Thibodaux, Louisiana did not qualify for the finals but covered 60 meters in 7.83 seconds for another personal record.

It’s back to work for the Privateer track teams in Birmingham, Saturday, Jan. 14 as they compete in the Vulcan Invite at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena.

“Tomorrow should be fun because we had some off-events today like the 300 meters and the 500, but tomorrow it’s back to the traditional races.”
