Senior earns distinction after posting a cumulative 4.0 GPA

NEW ORLEANS – A standout on the course and in the classroom, University of New Orleans standout Markus Krieger has been honored for his success in both as the senior from Stockholm, Sweden, was named to the Southland Conference Men’s Golf All-Academic Team on Wednesday based on a vote of league head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors.

The 6-5, 195-pound graduate of Danderyds Gymnasium, earned the distinction after posting a perfect 4.0 grade point average throughout his college career and recently earned his degree in finance. The 2016-17 academic honor is the first of Krieger’s career and marks the first time a UNO student-athlete claimed a spot on the SLC men’s golf all-academic squad.

“It’s a great honor for Markus,” first-year UNO head coach Jeff Lorio said. “He’s worked extremely hard both in the classroom and on the golf course. He finished with a 4.0 cumulative GPA, and to not make as low as a ‘B’ throughout his college career is pretty amazing. On top of that, he has played extremely well on the course. He has probably worked harder than anyone else on the team. This is a tremendous honor for a well-deserving student-athlete in our program.”

As a senior, Krieger played in all 10 tournaments and led the team in stroke average (75.103), rounds played (29) and rounds below par (5). Along the way, he posted three Top 10 finishes with a second-place showing at the Samford Intercollegiate from Oct. 31-Nov. 1 (71-70-77=218), tying for eighth at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate from Oct. 17-18 (73-75-71=219) and tying for ninth at the Grove Page Classic from March 13-14 (71-70-80=221).

Krieger carded a season-best 70 twice: in the second round of the Samford Invite on Oct. 31 and the second round of the Grove Page Classic on March 13. His season-best effort was a two-over par 218 at the Samford Invitational and added plus-three performances at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate and The Atchafalaya Intercollegiate from Feb. 20-21 (72-71-76=219)

In addition to his effort on the links and in the academic realm, Krieger was named a Privateer Director of Athletics Scholar for his academic work in the fall, served as the President of UNO’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was also a member of the peer tutoring group.

Krieger earned SLC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and UNO 3.0 Club recognition in each of his first three collegiate campaigns. He is joined on the Southland Conference Men’s Golf All-Academic Team by Paul Obermann of Southeastern Louisiana, Louis Tomlinson of Central Arkansas and the Stephen F. Austin duo of Major Monzingo and Baxter Ward.
