JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The New Orleans Boosters opened play Monday in the 2016 All-American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) National Tournament. New Orleans defeated Altoona 10-2 following a strong offensive performance that produced 12 hits.
The Boosters were led by Owen Magee (4 for 6, 1 double, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Chris Reid (2 for 2), and Troy Lewis (2 for 5, 4 RBI). New Orleans never trailed after taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning and adding runs in the third, fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth.
New Orleans starter Jace Nini picked up the win, pitching five innings and striking out four. Christian Latino closed the game in relief.
New Orleans will face Chicago Metro at 11:00 a.m. EST Tuesday and Buffalo (New York) on Wednesday as the tournament’s pool play bracket progresses. Following Wednesday’s games, the top two team from each of the tournament’s four – four team pools will advance to a single elimination bracket.
This week, New Orleans, the AAABA defending champion, marks the 70th Anniversary of its first AAABA Tournament appearance in 1946. The franchise has captured fourteen national titles with thousands of local baseball players making the trip to Johnstown over the decades. The 2016 squad is composed of players from across southeast Louisiana colleges including Delgado Community College, University of New Orleans, McNeese, Louisiana State and more.
