Privateers to close out play in the Blazer Beach Duals on Saturday with showdowns against UAB, Austin Peay

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Taking the court with high hopes and boundless enthusiasm, the University of New Orleans beach volleyball team hit a roadblock in the form of the Mercer Bears as the Privateers dropped a 5-0 decision on Friday during the opening day of the Blazer Beach Duals at the UAB West Campus Athletic Complex.

All five pairs were decided in straight sets and the closest frame came in No. 3 play where the duo of freshman Veronica Corcoran and senior Lauren Levy dropped a 21-15 opening set to Danielle Faust and Claire Waliczek before falling in the second stanza, 21-10. The Privateers will look to bounce back on Saturday when UNO takes on host UAB at 10 a.m. before closing out the tournament at 2 p.m. against Austin Peay.

“We were very inconsistent on a day where fundamentals were paramount,” UNO head coach Millicent Van Norden said. “It was very windy and cold to accompany many youthful mistakes against a team that did not commit a lot of errors. The intensity level of our team and commitment to working intently for every point is encouraging. With continued focus on the little details, we will improve daily.”

Redshirt-junior Cara Sander and freshman Victoria Corcoran played a steady contest at the top of the lineup, but the Bears tandem of Emily Krogman and Toni Penrod were able to keep the pair at arm’s reach for most of the outing with wins of 21-14 and 21-13. At the No. 2 spot, freshman Rachel Kuhn and sophomore Blessing Dunn dropped a 21-10, 21-13 decision to Emma and Sophie Peel.

Rookie Karli Baker and sophomore Samantha Uline fell to Madison Kerr and Amber Gibson in No. 4 action, 21-11, 21-19, and the freshman combo of Ryan Rand and Brianna Vega dropped a 21-8, 21-9 outing to Morgan MacGilver and Gretja Otten.

Following the weekend in Birmingham, UNO returns to action on Saturday, March 11, when the Privateers head to Gulf Shores, Ala., to take part in the Badger Beach Bash. From there, New Orleans will play at ULM on Thursday, March 16.
