UNO enters final weekend series at Northwestern State seeking postseason berth

Privateers end regular season with three games against Demons

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team ends the 2017 regular season this weekend in Natchitoches, La., as the Privateers take on Northwestern State in a three-game series with their postseason aspirations on the line. First pitch for the pivotal series is scheduled for Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m., with game two on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and the regular season finale on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Privateers are currently 13-14 in Southland Conference play, ninth place in the league standings and one game back of Nicholls and Stephen F. Austin who are tied for seventh. To see the official Southland Conference tie breaker procedures, click here.

“[Northwestern State] has been playing better lately, so I’m sure they will come out with some confidence and try to send their season out the right way. We have to go out there and score some runs and have someone from our bullpen step up and get some big innings for us.”

New Orleans (25-26-1) enters the contest after completing its midweek docket on Tuesday, losing to Tulane 8-6.

Offensively, New Orleans is hitting .292 (530-1814) with a .436 slugging percentage off the strength of 98 doubles, 14 triples and 45 home runs while posting 292 RBI. Junior catcher John Cable leads four Privateers who are hitting over .300 with a .369 average, followed by junior infielder Owen Magee, senior infielder Samuel Capielano and sophomore outfielder Orynn Veillon with marks of .320, .319 and .302 respectively. Magee leads the team with 15 doubles with Capielano and Veillon both boasting three triples while Veillon has a team-best 10 home runs and Magee leads the team with 44 RBI.

On the mound, UNO sports a 4.53 ERA while tallying 403 strikeouts with 196 walks in 460.2 innings of work to date. Junior right-handed pitcher Shawn Semple leads the team with eight victories, with sophomore southpaw Bryan Warzek posting a team-low 2.18 ERA in a team-high 86.2 innings and holds opponents to a .229 batting average while Semple boasts a team-best 97 Freshman right handed pitcher Reeves Martin leads the team with three saves and 27 mound appearances this season.

Northwestern State (20-31) ended its midweek schedule against nationally-ranked LSU on Tuesday, losing 9-5 in their final road game of the season.

The Demons are hitting .243 (403-1659) as a team with a .367 slugging percentage coming from 98 doubles, nine triples and 30 home runs while tallying 238 RBI. David Fry leads Northwestern State with a .349 batting average and 21 doubles, 10 home runs and 44 RBI while Cade Jones chips in a team-best four triples.

On the mound, Northwestern State has a team ERA of 5.96 with 269 strikeouts and 207 walks in 439.0 innings of work. Cullen McDonald leads the Demons with a 3.88 ERA, while Nathan Jones and Evan Tidwell both have four victories with Tidwell logging a team-high 78.2 innings and Jones tossing 44 strikeouts.
