Privateers move to .500 on the season after win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of New Orleans baseball team continued its weekend series against UIW on Saturday afternoon, defeating the hosts 9-2 for the Privateers second-straight victory.

New Orleans (21-21-1, 10-10 Southland Conference) posted 14 total hits with eight different Privateers logging at least one. Senior second baseman Samuel Capielano paced the attack with three hits and two RBI, while junior third baseman Owen Magee, junior catcher John Cable, junior right fielder Tristan Clarke and junior designated hitter Dakota Phillips all logged two hits with Cable and senior first baseman Dakota Dean matching Capielano’s two RBI.

“I thought we did a good job offensively,” head coach Blake Dean said. “We were being aggressive and capitalizing on the free bases [UIW] gave us. We got some big runs in the later stages to put the game away.”

While the offense put up impressive numbers, the defense made big plays as well to hold UIW (17-27, 5-15 Southland Conference) to only two runs. In the sixth inning, the Cardinals opened up the bottom of the stanza with a walk, hit by pitch and single to load the bases with no outs. With the tying run at the plate, the Privateers defense got the runner out at home on the ensuing at bat, followed by back-to-back strikeouts by sophomore southpaw Bryan Warzek to end the inning without allowing a run to score and keeping UNO’s 5-1 advantage intact.

“That was huge,” Dean said of the sixth inning, “[Warzek] stepped up and made big pitches when it mattered. I thought he did a good job overall of holding UIW down. [Martin] Reeves did a good coming out of the bullpen after that inning and keeping their offense down.”

UIW took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the third, but a five-run response by the Privateers gave the visitors the 5-1 lead. Magee opened up the scoring with a single to center field which allowed junior left fielder Jay Robinson to score. Magee was not on base for long, as Cable followed him up with a single that sent Capielano and Magee home to give UNO its first lead of the game. Clarke added to the lead with a single to score Cable, followed by a base hit from Phillips which scored Dean.

The Privateers added two runs in the eighth off a home run from Dean, with a two-RBI single from Capielano in the ninth ending the scoring.

Warzek got the win on the mound after holding the Cardinals to one run in 6.0 innings while striking out five batters and walking two. Freshman righty Reeves Martin came in and threw the final 3.0 innings to get the save, allowing one run off five hits with a strikeout.

For UIW, Mark Whitehead went 3-3 in the batters’ box with a RBI, while Bryce Shepherd scored both the Cardinals’ runs. Bernie Martinez got the start for the home team, allowing five runs off 10 hits in 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and two walks.

Game two of the weekend series is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. UNO returns to First NBC Ballpark on Friday, May 5, when they begin a SLC series against Houston Baptist with first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. For tickets to future Privateers athletic events, contact the UNO Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 280-GAME (4263) and season tickets can be purchased over the Internet by clicking HERE.
