Mount Carmel, Ben Franklin, Vandebilt Catholic, Newman earn top spots in soccer coaches rankings

Defending state champions Mount Carmel, Ben Franklin, Vandebilt Catholic and Newman are the top-ranked teams in the first Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association Rankings released Monday.

Mount Carmel (2-1-1) holds the top spot in Division I. The Cubs won 3-0 at East Ascension Tuesday. St. Scholastica is second with St. Joseph’s third, Byrd fourth and Acadiana fifth. Dominican is seventh with Mandeville eighth and Fontainebleau ninth.

Ben Franklin (3-0) sits in the top spot in Division II. The Falcons open play in the Dominican Tournament this evening at 7 p.m. against Destrehan in City Park. St. Thomas More is second with Lakeshore third, Parkway fourth and Alexandria fifth.

Vandebilt Catholic (3-2-1) tops the Division III rankings. The Terriers host St. Thomas More tonight at 7 p.m. in a showdown of state powers. E.D. White Catholic is third with Academy of the Sacred Heart (NO) fourth and Loyola Prep and Teurlings Catholic are tied for fifth. Ursuline is tied for seventh.

Newman (2-0) is number one in Division IV. The Greenies return to action against Dominican in the Dominican Tournament tonight at 7 p.m. Ascension Episcopal is second with Catholic of New Iberia third and St. Frederick fourth. Country Day and Episcopal of Acadiana are tied for fifth. Archbishop Hannan is seventh with Northlake Christian eighth and Pope John Paul II tied for ninth.
