SPRING, Texas – Playing in its second tournament of the spring, the Nicholls State University men’s golf team earned a fifth-place finish out of 13 teams in the Colin Montgomerie-HBU Husky Men’s Spring Invitational held at the Cypresswood Traditions Golf Course.
The Colonels posted their highest score of the event with a 296 in the final round, but moved up one position in the standings to finish with a 18-over 882. Nicholls opened the invitational with a 294 and followed up Monday afternoon with a 292.
After playing as an individual last week in the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate, Albert Badosa-Soler paced the Colonels with a 218 to finish in a tie for 12th. Soler shot a 1-under 71 in Monday morning’s opening 18 before firing a 74 and 73 in the next two rounds.
After a strong showing in Monday’s play, Chad Watts-Denyes slipped down to 22nd place after shooting a 6-over for a 221. Watts-Denyes also shot a 71 in the opening round, helped by four birdies on the front nine.
Josh Fullilove had the third-best score for the Colonels, firing a 222 for the tournament. His best round came in the second 18 where he shot an even-72. Last week’s leader, Jack Lee, came in fourth on the squad with a 223 and Peyton McCulloch shot a 231.
ULM, which won the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate hosted by Nicholls last week, took the team title with a 6-over 870. Stephen F. Austin’s Blake Stock earned medalist honors with a 6-under 210.
The Colonels will have next week off before returning to action in the Bob Sitton Invitational in Dallas, Texas on March 14.
