LAKE CHARLES – Lamar’s Colton Weisbrod scored 32 points and the Cardinals stormed out to an early double-digit lead then had to hold off McNeese to spoil the Cowboys’ senior day, 90-83, in the final game of the season for McNeese.
Four Cowboys scored in double-figures, led by senior Jamaya Burr with 21 points while freshman Kalob Ledoux added 17 points. Stephen Ugochukwu scored 14 and senior Lance Potier had 12 as McNeese lost its eighth straight game and finished 7-22 on the season.
Lamar improved to 18-13 on the season as it heads into next week’s Southland Conference Tournament.
McNeese trailed 52-35 at the half but not before trailing 51-30 with 1:31 to play in the half.
The Cowboys started the second half with back-to-back baskets by Ugochukwu and Ledoux to cut the gap to 13 at 52-39 then after falling back down by 16, McNeese scored 11 straight points with Burr scoring six of those as the Lamar lead dwindled to 55-50 with 16:35 to play.
A Ledoux layup with 11:31 to play closed the gap to 59-56 but McNeese was never able to get any closer than that margin.
Colton Weisbrod, who led Lamar with 32 points with 22 of those in the first half, scored eight of his second half points under the 2:30 mark to help Lamar put the game away.
The Cowboys shot 54 percent for the game, hitting 29 of 54 from the field but were only 5 of 17 from 3-point range.
Lamar sank 56 percent (31 of 55) for the game and 8 of 18 from long range for 44 percent.
Both team made 20 free throws while Lamar held a 32-24 in rebounding.
