LAKE CHARLES, La. – Southeastern Louisiana junior Dalina Dahlmans picked up a singles victory but it was not enough, as the Lion tennis team dropped its Southland Conference opener, 6-1, to McNeese Saturday afternoon at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.

The Lions fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Southland Conference play. McNeese won two doubles matches and five of six singles matches to improve to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in league action.

“We played hard, just not well enough to beat a team as good as McNeese,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. “We made too many mistakes when we had our best chances. We’ll continue to fight and keep pushing each other to get better each match.”

McNeese took an early lead in doubles play. After a win at No. 2, the Cowgirl pair of Hannah Brett and Sarah Jurakova handed Dahlmans and fellow junior Fleur Holtkamp (4-1) their first loss of the spring, 6-4, on the No. 1 court to take a 1-0 lead.

McNeese clinched the match in singles play with straight-set victories on courts 1,2,6 and 3. On No. 4, SLU junior Lucia Bustamante pushed Vivien Borbely to three sets before ultimately falling, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Dahlmans (3-2) helped Southeastern avoid the shutout. She outlasted McNeese’s Phonexay Chitdara, 6-2, 7-6, on the No. 5 singles court.

SLU will now head to the Northeast for a pair of matches in West Point, New York. On Wednesday, Southeastern will face Army at 2 p.m. and will take on Fordham on Thursday at 5 p.m. Both times listed are Central.
