McNeese athletes take part at Samford Multi-Event Meet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – McNeese opened up competition here Wednesday at the Samford Heptathlon/Pentathlon 2017 with Tanner Gills and Steven Benjamin taking part in day 1 of the 2-day heptathlon.

Through four events, Gills is in 10th place with 2,404 points while Benjamin is 17th with 1,625 points.

Gills’ best event finishes came in the high jump and shot put. He placed third in the high jump after clearing 6-0.75 and placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 38-6.

Benjamin’s best finish was in the shot put where he placed 10th with a top throw of 34-8.25.

The heptathlon will wrap up on Thursday with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000-meter run.

Also on Thursday, the women’s pentathlon will begin.

Competing for the Cowgirls will be newcomer Ashley Johnson along with Kristian Ojonta and Grace McKenzie.
