Kansas City, MO – No. 11 LSUA senior Paula Gordillo’s undefeated week against three ranked opponents helped propel her to the NAIA National Player of the Week award, the NAIA announced on Wednesday. The award was her first and second in three weeks for the program.
In all three doubles matches, Gordillo teamed up with Laia Charles to claim a trio of victories, all in position #2. Against #24 Reinhardt, they won 8-3, and then picked up a 9-7 win in the match against #16 Middle Georgia State, before finishing off the week with an 8-5 win in the match against #3 SCAD Savannah.
On the singles side, Gordillo stayed in the #6 position, where she went 2-0 with one match left unfinished. Against #24 Reinhardt, she rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win, helping propel LSUA to a 5-0 win over the Eagles. In the match against #16 Middle Georgia, her match was still ongoing when the Generals claimed the 5-1 victory over the Knights. Her 6-0, 6-2 win in the match against #3 SCAD Savannah had LSUA on the verge of upsetting the Bees, though the Generals would eventually fall 5-4 to round out the trip.
Gordillo is the second General this season, and second ever, to be named National Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, joining Sara Andrade who took the award two weeks ago. She is also the second player from a Red River Athletic Conference institution, also with Andrade, to win the honor.
The Generals (15-2) head to New Orleans on Saturday to take on #9 Xavier in the regular season finale. Opening serve against the Gold Nuggets is still to be announced.
