After leading the Wolf Pack to victory at the TWU Bojangles Spring Invitational last week, Loyola University New Orleans sophomore Daria Delfino (SO/Cranston, R.I.) was selected as this week’s Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Women’s Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Against a stacked field riddled with ranked teams and programs receiving votes in the national poll, Delfino came out in the first round and carded a tournament best 72 to end the first day at the Tennessee National Golf Club in first place. The sophomore returned on day two and shot a 77 to finish the tournament with a plus-five 146 to claim victory by a single stroke over teammate Julchen Narwark (SR/Buchholz in der Nordheide, .de) and Point University’s Courtney Lowery.
Delfino’s individual medalist honor was the second of her career and just the second in Loyola women’s golf history.
As a team, the Wolf Pack shot a 627 at the event, highlighted by a 308 on day two which goes down as the lowest round score in program history. After finishing day one in second, the Wolf Pack used its historic second round to overcome No. 20 Northwestern Ohio on day two to claim the team title (by nine strokes) for just the third time ever.
Following its dominating performance in Tennessee, Loyola received 30 votes in Friday’s NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, marking just the second time in program history that the team has earned votes in the national poll.
