Loyola swimming caps off day three at NAIA National Championships

(Columbus, Ga.) The Loyola University New Orleans swim team returned to the Columbus Aquatic Center on Friday evening to take part in day three of the NAIA National Championship.

Through 28 events, the men’s team jumped one spot from yesterday to end day three in 14th place (38 points) while the women’s squad remained in 16th with 44 points heading into the final day of action tomorrow.

Olivet Nazarene University remains in first on both sides of the standings – topping the men’s ranking with 396.5 points and the women’s side with 438 total points.

After the women’s team got saddled with a disqualification for early takeoff, the combined efforts of Jon Tarpey (FR/St. Charles, Ill.), Salvador James III (FR/Mandeville, La.), Tim Buisson (JR/Hattiesburg, Miss.), and Warren Massimini (FR/Metairie, La.) earned 10 points with a 12th place finish in the 200 medley relay.

In the men’s 400 IM, Cole Moreno (FR/Miami, Fla.) grabbed ninth with a time of 4:11.09 and Blaise Wise (FR/Luling , La.) ended the event in 17th with a time 4:19.11.

Paige Carter (FR/Tampa, Fla.) took home 11th in the 200 free after touching the wall in 1:56.31 before James claimed 10th in the 100 back in 52.71 to earn seven points for the men’s team.

The highlight of the afternoon was the performance of Nina Mantich (FR/Whiting, Ind.) in the 100 back, as the freshman’s eight place finish (58.65) was the highest for Loyola throughout the championship thus far.

The final day of the NAIA Championship begins tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with preliminary swims. The final round from Columbus, Georgia is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
