Loyola stuns No. 20 Dillard 82-65 at home on Tuesday evening

NEW ORLEANS, LA.- The Loyola University New Orleans Men’s Basketball team played host to crosstown rival No. 20 Dillard University Bleu Devils on Tuesday night inside The Den.

The Wolf Pack were firing on all cylinders and The Den was rocking en route to an 82-65 victory.

Dillard jumped out to an early lead by scoring the game’s first five points. They held the lead until Jr. Johnny Griffin (Chicago, Ill./Bloom Trail High) stole a Bleu Devil pass and took it end-to-end for a thunderous reverse dunk to tie the game at seven. Loyola captured the lead, 12-11, on a three-pointer from Fr. G Tre’Von Jasmine (Edgard, La./East St. John High) with 15:51 remaining in the half.

The Wolf Pack relinquished the lead and trailed 16-15 with 13:17 left on the clock. Highlighted by two buckets in the paint by Griffin, the Wolf Pack went on a 9-0 run to give them a 25-16 lead.

The Bleu Devils, once again, cut into the Loyola lead and brought it down to two. So. G Nick Parker (Port Allen, La./Port Allen) scored six points and Fr. C Henry McDonald (Fernwood, Miss./Parklane Academy) hit a deep three pointer en route to a 12-0 run to end the half with the Wolf Pack leading 39-25.

Loyola pushed down on the throttle to start the second half and opened up the game in their favor. After conceding three points, the Wolf Pack went on a dominant 30-12 run in the first eleven minutes of the half. The run gave them their biggest lead of the game, 69-40, with 8:53 remaining.

The Wolf Pack maintained control of the lead throughout the remainder of the half. Fr. G Jacob Drummond (Hammond, La./St. Thomas Aquinas) capped the scoring with his first career points and the Wolf Pack won by a final score of 82-65.

The Wolf Pack shot 28-of-58 (48.3%) from the field and 9-of-20 (47.4%) from beyond the arc. Loyola moved the ball around very well as a team which led to 15 assists.

The Wolf Pack had, arguably, its’ best defensive night of the season by holding Dillard to just 26-of-63 (41.3%) shooting from the field and an astounding 2-of-13 (15.4%) from deep. They also forced 13 turnovers and had nine blocks, led by Griffin and So. C Nate Pierre (Folsom, La./Covington) with three each.

Two members of the Wolf Pack registred a double-double on Tuesday. Griffin poured in a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Parker added 18 points and a career-high 11 boards. Jasmine had a solid game with 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. In all, Loyola featured ten players in the scoring column.

For the Bleu Devils, Houston Chatman led the way with 13 points and Kristian Clark followed him with ten points.

The Wolf Pack return to SSAC action again on Saturday, February 6, against the University of Mobile at 4:00 pm in The Den.
