(Westwego, La.) Coming off a lopsided sweep in yesterday’s conference doubleheader, the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team returned to Segnette Field on Saturday afternoon to close out its three-game series against Bethel University.

Prior to today’s game, head coach Doug Faust and the rest of the Wolf Pack baseball team held a special ceremony to honor the 2017 class before the group’s final home game. With family and friends present, Peyton Senner (SR/New Orleans, La.), Blake Toscano (SR/Metairie, La.), Nick Moore (SR/Marrero, La.), Jordan Green (SR/Shreveport, La.), Stewart Campbell (SR/New Orleans, La.), Alexander Lorenzo (SR/Miami, Fla.) and Caleb Bohan (SR/Marietta, Ga.) were brought out on the field to be recognized for the numerous contributions they each have given the Loyola baseball team over the years.

The early parts of Saturday’s game looked eerily similar to yesterday’s contest as the Wildcats raced out to an early 7-0 lead in Westwego. Unlike yesterday, however, the Wolf Pack would respond to the Bethel onslaught on Saturday as the squad put up three runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-3. After the visitors put up one run in the fifth to extend the advantage to 8-3, a four-run fifth by Loyola would bring the Wolf Pack within a single run at 8-7. Despite its best comeback effort, Loyola would be outscored 3-0 over the next four innings to fall 11-7, marking just the second time this season that the Wolf Pack have been swept by a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) opponent in 2017.

Sitting at 21-29 overall and 7-14 in the SSAC, the Wolf Pack will end the regular season next week on the road against Middle Georgia State. Loyola will take on the Knights twice on Thursday (April 27) before closing out the series in Cochran, Georgia with a single game on Friday (April 28).

Bethel 11 – Loyola 7

The early parts of Saturday’s game were all Bethel as the Wildcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first 3.5 innings.

In the fourth, pinch hitter Rawlings Elam (JR/Houston, Tx.) led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. With two outs, Brandon Wilson Jr. (FR/Chalmette, La.) connected on a single to advance Elam before Kevin Meehan (FR/Metairie, La.) stepped to the plate and sent a single to left to score the runner from third. John Hernandez (JR/Tampa, Fl.) then came through with a huge two-RBI single to bring the score to 7-3.

After Bethel added one more run in the fifth, Charlie Seiter (SO/Mobile, Ala.) stepped to the plate for the Wolf Pack and connected on a double to left. He would later score on a misplayed ground ball by Bethel’s Christian Padin to bring the score to 8-4. Lorenzo would follow and the senior sent a shot off the wall in left to score Elam from third before Kevin Meehan delivered with a two-RBI single to score both Jesse Jordan (SO/New Iberia, La.) and Lorenzo to bring Loyola within one at 8-7 heading into the sixth.

Despite the comeback effort, Loyola would be outscored 3-0 over the last three innings to fall 11-7 on Saturday.

Meehan led the Wolf Pack with three hits on Saturday while adding a team-high three RBI. Lorenzo and Senner each collected two hits in the game with Senner tallying a team-best 11 putouts.

Loyola used five pitchers against the Wildcats on Saturday with starter Nick Moore getting the loss. Moore gave up six runs (six earned) on five hits with two walks in 2.2 innings pitched to drop the senior to 2-3 overall on the year.
