Elijah Mitchell is developing quite a reputation after just three weeks of the prep football season.

The Erath running back has set two school rushing records: 304 ground yards in a 41-0 rout of Vermilion Catholic on Sept. 16, and five touchdowns in that game.

Mitchell, whose three-game production has totaled 638 yards, nearly cracked the 300-yard mark a second time in a 41-7 win over Delcambre on Sept. 9. His 284 yards came on just eight attempts for a one-game average of 35.5 yards-per-attempt, which produced the second Erath record.

For three games, Mitchell has now rushed for 638 yards on 44 carries. That’s a gain of 14.5 yards every time he takes the ball from the quarterback.

He joined Kordavion Washington of  Calvary Baptist, who rushed for 322 yards against Peabody, and  Ecole Classique’s Cordell Labore, who gained 315 yards against Ridgewood as the three backs with more than 300 yards in a single game this season.

The weekly statewide leaders are submitted by prep writers who are members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. They will be updated throughout the 10 weeks of the regular season. The areas covered are New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Houma-Thibodaux, Lafayette, Lake Charles A1exandria, Shreveport and Monroe.

Another outstanding performance was turned in by Karr quarterback Aldon Clark in the Cougars’ demonstrative 55-46 victory over Brother Martin on Sept. 15. The senior completed 17-of-21 passes for 334 yards with four of his tosses going for touchdowns in the Cougars’ third win in as many weeks.

His numbers in that game raised Clark’s season total to 787 yards with nine touchdowns, figures that place him second to Parkway’s Justin Rogers in total passing yards. But overtaking Rogers will be a Herculean task, considering the Parkway passer has accumulated 962 yards in victories over Bastrop, Lufkin, Texas and Huntington.

Slidell’s Wayne Griffin’s 782 yards are just five yards short of Clark’s total. And Eli Poche of Lusher is also among the passing yardage leaders with 735 yards.

No new single-game stat leaders emerged last week, but Carver’s Gary Young came close when he accumulated 237 yards on eight pass receptions in the Rams’ 34-0 triumph over Helen Cox.

The leader in that category is Ascension Christian’s Ian Carter, who started the season with 10 catches for 256 yards in a 47-28 win over Gueydan on Sept. 2.

T.J. Myers of Winnfield moved closer to leader Tony St. Julien of Vinton for the single-game scoring pace when he tallied five touchdowns and a pair of 2-point conversions to lead the Tigers to a 42-14 win over Caldwell Parish on Sept. 16. His 34 points put him two shy of St. Julien’s 36, accomplished on Sept. 9 when he scored six TDs in Vinton’s 44-0 trouncing of Rosepine.

The overall rushing leader is Calvary Baptist’ Washington with 685 yards on 94 carries and 10 touchdowns.

Brother Martin’s Bruce Jordan-Swilling’s 219 yards and five touchdowns against Karr last week moved the senior Crusader into seventh place among the statewide rushing leaders. His three-game total is 544 yards on 80- carries, and his 11 total touchdowns places him in a second place tie among scoring leaders with Washington.

Also ranked among the rushing leaders are the northshore duo of  Jakyle Holmes of Ponchatoula (574 yards) and Fontainebleau’s Brandon Akkawi (549 yards), who rank Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Their teams will square off against each other in a District 6-5A clash on Oct. 21.
