PENSACOLA, Fla. – Southeastern Louisiana rallied from a four-run deficit Sunday at Blue Wahoos Stadium, topping Troy, 5-4, to complete a weekend sweep of the field at the Cox Diamond Invitational.
The Lions (7-4) wrapped up the weekend undefeated thanks in part to its biggest rally of the season and completed its 8-game road trip with a 5-3 record.
The first four batters of the game singled off Southeastern starting pitcher Kade Granier, staking the Trojans (6-5) to an early lead. Granier walked the next batter, right fielder Mason Rogers, to force in a run. Troy picked up another run on a double-play ball, one of three the Lions would turn in the game.
A junior from Destrehan, Louisiana, Granier settled in after a rough initial frame to work six innings, his longest outing of the season.
Up 3-0, the Trojans tacked on a run in the fourth off a pair of doubles by third baseman Drew Frederic and center fielder Mack Hathcock.
Southeastern started its comeback in the bottom of the inning.
Left fielder Drew Avans, a junior from Alabaster, Alabama, dropped down a bunt single to lead off the fourth and advanced to second base when Taylor Schwaner was hit by a pitch. Second baseman Carson Crites, a senior from Amarillo, Texas, sacrificed both runners into scoring position.
Avans scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Derrick Mount, a senior from Saucier, Mississippi.
After catcher Daniel Wasinger drew a walk, putting a pair on once again for the Lions, right fielder Ryan Byers ripped a double down the left-field line. Schwaner and Wasinger both scored, pulling Southeastern within one.
The Lions tied the game up in the sixth against Troy starting pitcher Houston Mabray.
Schwaner, a junior from New Orleans, Louisiana, drew a leadoff walk, reaching base for the third time in the game without a hit. Crites followed with a single to center, chasing Mabray in favor of reliever Corey Childress (0-2).
Schwaner was erased on a fielder’s choice that moved Crites to second. Wasinger, a junior from El Paso, Texas, pulled a one-out single through the right side to drive in Crites with the tying run.
Troy pitching walked five and hit one batter in the game. Three of the six freebies came around to score, including the eventual winning run in the seventh.
Shortstop Brennan Breaud drew a leadoff walk from Childress. He advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Avans’ two-out single to left, giving the Lions their first lead of the game.
Troy threatened late, but Lion relief pitchers stranded the potential tying run at third base in both the eighth and ninth.
Bryce Tassin (2-1) earned the win, working two scoreless innings in relief of Granier. The redshirt freshman from Walker, Louisiana, surrendered one hit and one walk, striking out one batter.
Josh Green earned his first save of the season, stranding an inherited runner in the ninth. The junior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, retired all three he faced, fanning the game’s final batter.
Childress was saddled with the loss, allowing one run in two innings of relief work. He surrendered two hits and a walk, striking out a pair of batters.
Avans and Jacob Seward, a senior from New Orleans, picked up two hits apiece for the Lions.
Southeastern returns home to host West Virginia in a pair of midweek contests Tuesday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. Wednesday’s game is the annual Pack the Pat game with the first 300 students through the gates receiving free Chick-Fil-A and a Pack the Pat t-shirt.
