NEW ORLEANS, La. – Southeastern Louisiana flooded the scoreboard with double-digit runs again Tuesday, extending its winning streak to six straight with a 16-2 win over Tulane at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Lions (29-15) swept the season series against Tulane (22-24), defeating the Green Wave, 8-5, earlier this season in Hammond, Louisiana, making it back-to-back seasons Southeastern has accomplished the feat.
Both teams picked up a run in the first inning, but Southeastern swamped Green Wave pitchers with continuous pressure. The Lion leadoff hitter reached seven times in nine innings and the lineup turned over six times during the course of the game.
Catcher Evan Pace, a sophomore from Zachary, Louisiana, drew a leadoff walk in the second inning. He moved up to second base on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Jacob Seward’s one-out single up the middle. Pace scored on Ryan Byers’ RBI double to left.
Taylor Schwaner, a junior from Slidell, Louisiana, ripped a two-out single to left to drive in both Seward and Byers, putting the Lions up, 4-1.
Left-hander Payton Robinson (3-0), a sophomore from Mobile, Alabama, relieved Southeastern starting pitcher Derrick Mount in the second inning. A double-play ground ball erased an inherited runner and Robinson got another groundout to end the inning.
Robinson scattered a pair of hits in his five-inning stint, allowing one run, on the way to earning the win. He walked one and struck out three batters.
Meanwhile, Southeastern poured it on against seven Green Wave pitchers.
The Lions added two more in the third inning, chasing Tulane starting and losing pitcher Ross Massey (0-7).
Exploding for seven runs in the seventh, Southeastern sent the entire lineup to the plate in a single inning for the seventh time in the last six games. An RBI single by Seward, sac fly by Byers, a pair of two-run doubles by Brennan Breaud and Drew Avans, and an RBI single by Mount provided the runs.
Southeastern took advantage of a pair of walks and pair of Tulane errors in the eighth to produce its final three runs without a hit.
The Lions have scored 10 or more runs in five of their last six games.
Right-handers Josh Green, Bryce Tassin and Carlo Graffeo each worked perfect innings in relief to close out the game.
Byers (2-for-4), Breaud (2-for-5), Schwaner (2-for-4), Carson Crites (2-for-6), Avans (2-for-5), Mount (2-for-4) and Seward (2-for-5) all turned in multi-hit performances at the plate. Byers, Breaud, Schwaner, Avans and Mount each drove in a pair while Byers and Seward both scored three runs apiece.
Seward, a senior from New Orleans, continues to climb the career charts at Southeastern. With five at bats and three runs scored, he bypassed former Lion Ty Summerlin for second in both categories. Seward now has 836 at bats and 178 runs scored in his career. He now ranks third all-time in games played (222), breaking a tie with former Lion Cody Gougler.
Southeastern begins a six-game homestand Friday, hosting Sam Houston State in a three-game series that features the second and fourth place teams in the Southland Conference. The two teams are separated by just 1.5 games.
