LAFAYETTE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana finally broke through in the eighth inning, but it was too little, too late in a 9-2 loss Wednesday to UL Lafayette at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park.

The Lions (22-14) won the first two games in the series, but struggled offensively against a trio of Ragin’ Cajun (23-14-1) pitchers in the finale.

UL Lafayette jumped out in front with a pair of runs in the first, including a solo home run by right fielder Steven Sensley. The Ragin’ Cajuns tacked on single runs in both the second and third, chasing Southeastern starting pitcher Derrick Mount (1-1) from the game.

Southeastern would fall behind, 6-0, before breaking through in the eighth.

Reliever Wyatt Marks hit Taylor Schwaner with a pitch to open up the inning. After Schwaner stole second base, center fielder Jacob Seward drew a one-out walk. The pair then executed a double steal.

Marks then hit pinch hitter Trey Morgan with a pitch and walked shortstop Brennan Breaud to force in a run.

The Ragin’ Cajuns answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, extending their lead to 9-1.

Southeastern’s final run came in the ninth.

Carson Crites ripped a one-out double to right and came around to score on Nate Hunter’s two-out, pinch-hit double to center.

Reliever Jacob Norman (1-0) earned the win, working 4.2 scoreless innings for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Mount suffered the loss, allowing four runs in 2.1 innings of work.
