HOW IT HAPPENED
-A quick, pitcher’s game into the fourth inning, UAB jumped on the board first with a single run in the fourth inning when Zack Davis walked to open the bottom of the fourth for the Blazers and later scored via a wild pitch to give the hosts the lead.
-UAB added to the advantage the sixth inning with three runs, highlighted by a run scoring double and a pair of RBI singles, to push the lead to four before ULM made its push.
-The ULM eighth saw Nate Reynolds and Anthony Herrera reach before Johnny DeLaCruz drove in the first Warhawk run with a RBI single back up the middle. Turner Francis brought in the second run of the inning. Cade Stone then delivered a two-out, RBI single to pull ULM within one before Lowery was brought in for UAB to shut down the inning and the Warhawk scoring.
-Chad Bell was the only ULM player to finish with two hits in the loss, while he also walked twice as he reached safely in all four plate appearances. Herrera (double), DeLaCruz (RBI), Stone (RBI) and Spencer Hemphill each notched one hit for ULM as well.
-ULM left nine total baserunners stranded throughout the afternoon, including leaving the bases loaded in both the top of the sixth and the top of the eighth innings.
-Warhawk starter Josh Leone (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work with a pair of strikeouts. Relievers Tyler Schwaner and Matt Reeves combined to allow just one hit and one walk over the final 2 2/3 as ULM made its comeback push.
-Brewer Hicklen and Carter Pharis each had two hits to combine for four of UAB’s eight hits, while Blazer starter Garrett Whitlock improved to 3-0 after tossing six innings with five walks and three strikeouts. Lowery earned his third save of the year.
