MOBILE, Alabama – The Louisiana Tech women’s tennis tried to hand South Alabama its first home loss since 2013, but the Lady Techsters ended up falling to the Jaguars in Mobile by a final score of 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
LA Tech (7-6) was only able to pick up one point in singles, dropping the doubles point to USA (9-4) as well as five singles matches, two of which went into third sets.
Courts two and three in dubs got the Jaguars off to a 1-0 start with victories of 6-1 and 6-4, respectively.
The home team was then able to grab straight-set wins on courts one, three and four to clinch the match.
The Lady Techsters then got on the scoreboard thanks to sophomore Sonia Chen who picked up a comeback win at the No. 2 position, dropping the first set 6-0 to Laura Valkova before winning sets two and three, 6-1, 6-4. It marked the first time this season Valkova had fallen on court two this spring.
The opposite happened at No. 5 with junior Alba Escalona Perny and at No. 6 with freshman Jill van den Dungen. Both players got up with a first set win but were defeated.
LA Tech will return to the courts on Thursday, March 9, making the short drive down I-20 to take on in-state foe ULM. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
