METAIRIE, LA — St. Martin’s Episcopal School recently inducted John Lehman, an alumnus and multi-sport athlete, and Sam Dozier, who coached his baseball team to a state championship, into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. Emmy-Nominated WDSU sports anchor Fletcher Mackel was master of ceremonies at the presentation attended by the honorees, their families, St. Martin’s alumni, school leadership, and students. Dozier and Lehman were also presented at the St. Martin’s Saints Hall of Fame football game on Friday evening, October 14.

John Lehman was named best all-around athlete at St. Martin’s in 1962, his senior year, after excelling in fall, winter, and spring sports. As co-captain and quarterback of the football team, he led the Saints to a season with only one loss. He played center and forward on the varsity basketball team, which went to the second round of the playoffs, and he was named St. Martin’s varsity basketball MVP that season. Track and Field is where Lehman truly excelled. Among other achievements, he was the Class B Track and Field State Champion in the javelin and discus. He was named the school’s track and field MVP during his senior year.

Sam Dozier coached at St. Martin’s from 1986 to 2000, and in that time he taught hundreds of students more than just athletic skills. He instilled in his athletes traits that develop character, such as hard work and cooperation. He served as head baseball coach for all the years that he was at St. Martin’s. It was under Dozier, in the spring of 1991, that St. Martin’s baseball team went 23-0 and won the AA State Championship. In addition to coaching baseball, Dozier served as head football coach for eight years.

Founded in 1947, St. Martin’s is a coeducational, independent school that provides students from eight weeks through grade 12 with a challenging college preparatory education focused on development of the whole person. Students and faculty embrace the school’s motto, “Faith, Scholarship and Service.” For more information, visit
