Hometown Heroes: Nola, Clevenger shine; Brignac, Bregman heat up in minors

Hometown Heroes updates on SportsNOLA.comFormer Catholic High and LSU star Aaron Nola was brilliant against Miami this past Sunday.

The young right-hander pitched a career-high eight innings, allowing only one runner to advance beyond first base as the Phillies shutout the Marlins 2-0 at Miami.

Nola improved to 4-1 overall with the win. He allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out six while throwing a career-high 100 pitches. He is 4-0 in his past six starts and now has a very solid 3.59 ERA.

The up-and-down season continues for former UL-Lafayette star Danny Farquhar, who was optioned back to Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League by the Seattle Mariners Sunday.

It is the second time that Farquhar has been sent down this season. With Seattle, Farquhar is 0-4 with a 5.75 ERA and one save in 30 relief appearances. With the Rainiers, Farquhar is 1-1 with a 3.62 ERA and three saves in 22 appearances.

Steve Clevenger continues to produce for the Baltimore Orioles. Clevenger, who spent time at Southeastern Louisiana, now has an eight game hit streak (13-for-32/.406) to raise his average to .391 with four doubles, one home run and seven RBI in 13 games played. Clevenger spent most of the season in Triple A at Norfolk.

Former Tulane star Brandon Gomes continues to pitch well out of the bullpen for Tampa Bay. Gomes has posted eight consecutive scoreless outings, covering 8 2/3 innings. He has not allowed a hit or a run in that span, striking out 13 batters to lower his ERA to 3.68 in 45 appearances. Gomes has allowed just 37 hits in 44 innings pitched.

National League All-Star D.J. LeMahieu of LSU continues his consistently good season for Colorado. LeMahieu entered Tuesday’s game in Atlanta in a bit of a slump, going just 4-for-27 (.148) in his last seven games but he broke out against the Braves, producing three hits and three RBI in a 5-1 win. LeMahieu is now batting .314 with 18 doubles, four triples, five homes and 50 RBI to go with 18 stolen bases for the Rockies. It was his 14th three-hit game of the season and the third time he has driven in three runs in a game this season.

Former UL-Lafayette star Jonathan Lucroy had a big game Tuesday night in an 11-6 loss at Cleveland. Lucroy went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.

Reid BrignacIn the midst of a difficult season for the New Orleans Zephyrs (Miami Marlins) of the Pacific Coast League, former St. Amant star Reid Brignac has been the bright spot of late. Brignac now has a 10-game hit streak (16-for-40/.400) to raise his average to .265 with 18 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 30 RBI for the Z’s. Brignac has a hit in his last 18 starts and has hit in 18-of-19 games overall.

Nick Dugas raised his average to .302 for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (New York Yankees) of the International League. The former Teurlings Catholic star has played in 16 games for the RailRiders and has five RBI.

Former Parkway and Centenary star Seth Lugo is off to a good start at Triple A Las Vegas (New York Mets) of the International League. Lugo is 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA in three starts for the 51’s. In 17 2/3 innings, Lugo has allowed 19 strikeouts.

Rob Segedin is finally healthy and it is showing for Double A Trenton (New York Yankees) of the Eastern League. The Tulane product has two-hit games in six of his last seven games played, going 12-for-27 (.444) to raise his average to .310 in 20 games played. Segedin has seven doubles, one triple, four home runs and 13 RBI for the Thunder.

Former LSU star Alex Bregman continues to perform well for Lancaster (Houston Astros) of the California League. Bregman now has an 11-game hit streak (18-for-43/.419) for the JetHawks to raise his average to .321 with five doubles, three triples, two home runs and 16 RBI with eight stolen bases.

In Class A, former UL-Monroe star Wil Browning continues to dominate at Dunedin (Toronto Blue Jays) of the Florida State League. Browning saved consecutive games on Aug. 22 and 23 and now has 20 saves for the Blue Jays to go with a 2-1 record and a brilliant 0.83 ERA in 29 appearances. In 32 2/3 innings pitched, Browning has allowed just 17 hits, striking out 38.

Former Holy Cross and Nicholls State hurler Ryan Deemes picked up his first win for Tri-City (Houston Astros) of the New York-Penn League on Aug. 19. Deemes is 1-0 with a solid 1.86 ERA in five appearances for the ValleyCats. In 19 1/3 innings, Deemes has allowed just 14 hits, striking out 19 batters.

Nate Fury, formerly of Rummel, Delgado and LSU, picked up his third save for Connecticut (Detroit Tigers) of the Midwest League on Aug. 20, going three shutout innings, fanning five hitters. Fury is 0-0 with a 1.78 ERA with three saves in 15 relief appearances for Connecticut. In 25 1/3 innings, Fury has allowed 16 hits and striking out 30.

Former Breaux Bridge star Chaz Hebert has put together an outstanding string of appearances for Tampa (New York Yankees) of the Florida State League. In his last 11 outings, Hebert has allowed one earned run or less, primarily as a starter for the Yankees. In those 11 outings, Hebert has logged 53 innings, allowing just seven earned runs (1.19 ERA) on 41 hits, striking out 42. On the season, Hebert is 7-6 with a 2.95 ERA in 21 appearances for Tampa.

Phil Maton has extended his scoreless outing streak to 16 consecutive games for Tri-City (San Diego Padres) of the Northwest League. In that stretch, the former Louisiana Tech ace has been totally dominant, pitching 25 innings, allowing just 13 hits, striking 45 batters. Maton is now 4-1 with a 0.92 ERA and five saves in 20 appearances for the Dust Devils. Maton has pitched 29 1/3 innings, allowing 18 hits, striking out 51.
