THIBODAUX, La. – Construction continues at Nicholls State University’s John L. Guidry Stadium, where the home of the Colonel football program is receiving a facelift in the form of a new synthetic playing surface.
Crews began removing the old playing surface on April 18, and the first rolls of turf were laid out last week. The project is on track to be completed in time for the University’s commencement exercises on May 13.
The new turf field is being installed by Geo-Surfaces out of Baton Rouge, a leader in the synthetic turf industry and creator of the GeoGreen™ Replicated Grass™system and the GeoFlo shock pad technology. The combination of these two technologies makes the new field the safest in the industry.
The new field design will feature the Nicholls logo at midfield, along with Manning Field and Southland Conference logos on each 25-yard-line.
“This project would not be possible without the generosity of Cooper Collins and the support of the University and the Nicholls State University Foundation. Our department is indebted to and appreciates each of these individuals and groups,” said Matt Roan, Nicholls Director of Athletics. “This enhancement will impact our University, department, and program in several ways. First and foremost, its safety and playability are first-in-class. The welfare and experience of our student-athletes is of supreme importance. Additionally, its durability will allow us to host additional events, it will enhance our fan experience, and it will provide us a boost in recruiting.”
The Colonels will open the 2017 season on the new turf Thursday, August 31, hosting Southland rival, McNeese. Season tickets are available by calling the Nicholls Athletics Ticket Office at 985-448-4790 or by visiting geauxcolonels.com.
